Our flock is the only fully performance recorded Romney flock in the UK. We started recording with the MLC twenty years ago, so the figures, which are year on year comparisons, are now much more meaningful.

Through use of ram lambs to reduce generation time and strict selection on good performance, we have made rapid advances in lean index score. This is reflected in better weights in lambs produced (up by 3kg since 1990) and milkier ewes.

We recently tried to bring in some genetics from another high-performance flock, and imported some semen from New Zealand. Results, although based on a small sample, were surprisingly disappointing, with the halfbred Kiwi lambs well down the performance scale against Aragon stock.

Our strong results have been reflected in the Czech Republic, where there are some 5,000 recorded Romneys. Aragon Romney derivatives have consistently outperformed New Zealand and other offspring in the Czech Republic. Czech breeders have seen the benefit and returned to buy more rams, to the point where we are told that currently 60% of the Czech Romney flock is from Aragon stock.
